Axis Communications recently announced a significant update to how its devices handle cryptographic security—and while this might not be top of mind for every organization, we believe it’s something our clients should be aware of.

If you operate in government, critical infrastructure, or regulated commercial environments, these updates could become important depending on where your security strategy and compliance obligations are headed.
🔍 Three Scenarios Where This May Apply:
You’re pursuing or renewing contracts tied to federal or defense agencies requiring FIPS 140‑2/3 compliance.
You manage physical security for energy, utilities, transportation, or telecom sites with national infrastructure exposure.
You’re responsible for system integrity and auditability in industries like banking, biotech, or data centers.
What Axis Announced—and Why We’re Paying Attention
Axis has introduced a FIPS 140‑2 Level 1 compliant cryptographic software module in AXIS OS 12.4, available across a wide range of devices. Even more notably, newer high-security cameras like the AXIS Q1809-LE now include FIPS 140‑3 Level 3 hardware-backed secure elements.
This means:
Existing deployments may be upgradable via software—no forklift replacement required.
New deployments can meet evolving cybersecurity mandates more easily.
Long-term device life and policy alignment just got more flexible.
Why We’re Flagging This
At Premise One, we watch the landscape for changes that could create risk, unlock opportunity, or simply help our clients stay prepared.
We don’t believe every site needs FIPS-grade security—but some absolutely will. And if you’re already planning for FY26 or aligning to NERC, CISA, or NIST guidance, this update might save time and budget down the road.
Want to Talk Strategy?
We’re offering brief strategy workshops and planning sessions for clients who want to evaluate where FIPS-compliant systems might fit into their broader roadmap. No pressure—just an opportunity to map possibilities, understand implications, and make smart, informed decisions now that can reduce fire drills later.
Let us know if you’d like to schedule a conversation. We’ll bring the coffee and the roadmap.
